Winchester Poetry Prize 2017

The prize will be judged by Sarah Howe who will read all the entries and will be present at the prize-giving event at the Winchester Poetry Day on Saturday 14 October 2017.

First prize will be £1000, second prize £500 and third prize £250.

Winners and long-listed poets will be invited to read at the special prize-giving event in Winchester. Winning and commended poems will also be published in a competition anthology to be launched on the day.

The competition is open to anyone aged 16 or over and entries may be on any subject in any form or style and no longer than 40 lines.

Entry fee is £5 for the first poem and £4 for subsequent entries.

Closing date is 31 July 2017.

Festival chair, the poet Stephen Boyce said: “The response to our inaugural Poetry Prize in 2016 was very gratifying and we were impressed with the quality of the poems received. It was decided almost at once that one of our aims would be to promote and foster the most exciting talent with this open award and that, although the festival itself takes place every two years, we will run the competition annually. We look forward to hearing from poets from around the country, and further afield.”
